Amherst Man Indicted in Schewel's Warehouse Fire

On November 7, 2005 a Lynchburg grand jury indicted Wendell Alphonso Ashley, age 34, a for one count of arson arising from the September 6, 2005 fire at the Schewel Furniture Company warehouse on John Capron Road. Ashley was an employee of the company at the time of the fire. The fire had been under investigation by the Lynchburg Fire Marshall's office and the Lynchburg Police Department.

 

Ashley, whose last known address is 118 Harris Road #3, Madison Heights, Virginia, was arrested on November 9th on the indictment. He had his first court appearance today before  Circuit Court Judge J. Leyburn Mosby. Judge Mosby set Ashley's bond at $20,000 and continued the matter until November 28th for determination of counsel.

 

No trial date has been set. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Gretchen Hutt.
