William G. Petty, Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Lynchburg since 1978, was sworn–in on March 20, 2006 before his family and friends as the newest associate judge of the Court of Appeals of Virginia. The ceremony took place at noon at the Wren Building of the College of William & Mary, Petty’s alma mater. Chief Judge Walter Felton of the Court of Appeals, a long-time associate of Petty, officiated.
Petty was unanimously elected to the judgeship by the Virginia General Assembly on March 10 to an eight-year term. He will maintain an office in the Lynchburg area and will travel throughout the state to sit on the Court.
The staff of the Lynchburg Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney would like to thank Mr. Petty for his years of service to the citizens of Lynchburg and for his much valued leadership over the years, and we wish Judge Petty well in his new position on the Court.
