Mike joined the Lynchburg Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office in 1984.  Since 1990, he served as Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney and was assigned the role of Chief Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney in 2002.  Mike most recently assumed the role of Commonwealth's Attorney in March 2006, when the previous Commonwealth's Attorney, William G. Petty, assumed a position as judge on the Virginia Court of Appeals.  Mike has also been cross-designated as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia since 1995. In addition to supervising a team of prosecutors, Mike handles the investigation and trial of drug and violent felonies.

Each summer, Mike returns to Williamsburg to teach fellow prosecutors statewide at the “Murder 1” homicide school, the “Top Gun” drug enforcement school, and the trial advocacy school. He also serves as the Moot Court Coordinator for the American Legion’s Boys State of Virginia. He is a frequent faculty member for the National College of District Attorneys trial advocacy courses in Columbia, South Carolina.  In 2003, Mike received the "Von Schuch Award" from the Virginia Association of Commonwealth's Attorneys; given annually to the outstanding assistant prosecutor in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  

A veteran of the United States Air Force, Mike lives in Lynchburg with his wife and family. In his spare time, he is an avid runner and takes part in the annual Special Olympics Torch Run to Charlottesville. He also plays, coaches, and referees soccer.
